Quick Review: If you buy only book ever, this is it! Dave is very specific, gives you the verbage that you can make you own, gives multiple stories of people who have built their book themselves and from scratch, and gives you the plan. Did you noticed I said “gives” a few times? I can’t emphasize it enough, this book is a gift to those aspire to become big producers but just need the guidance

Long Review:

17 months at the firm whose training program is unrivaled on the street and I learned more about the business and how to approach the business by reading 265 pages in this book. I read it once within two days and now I am reading it again. This book truly addresses what few other books do and that is how to build a financial advisory practice from the ground up for people who don’t have extraordinary resources. This book truly addresses what no other book does and that is how to build a financial advisory practice from the ground up for people who don’t have extraordinary resources (repeated because I can’t be there to stare you in the eye and tell you that you are doing yourself a huge disservice if you do not read this book).

One reason this industry chews up and spits out so many aspiring big producing advisors is threefold: 1)People who have made it don’t make time to pass on the knowledge, 2)Not all wildly successful advisors are great teachers, 3) Some of them are insecure and are worried you might take business from them. Over the course of my 17 months in the industry I have worked very hard trying to get the pearls of wisdom that are just laid out in this book.

P.S. Don’t let mediocre advisors in the industry steal you career. They will try to fill you with doubt and make you second guess yourself. Get this book so you can have the stories, strategies, anecdotes of some of the biggest producers in the industry.

P.S.S Dave-Whatever book you are working on now please get it out ASAP. I could have used this book 17 months ago. Yesterday I had a colleague ask to borrow the book when I was done. My reply was for him to buy his own damn book! (I keep my copy in my briefcase)

This item is a great improvement over the last edition and the font is a nice size. My only disappointment is with Amazon; I wish the paperback version had come up in my initial search because I definitely would have preferred that version for ease of use over the cumbersome hardcover.

This isn’t the first time this has happened when doing an Amazon search; I find that you often have to look harder for paperback. Make the effort because it’s worth the savings.

I got this book for a class. It was very informational. It is text heavy, so there isn’t a lot of charts and graphs. The vignette were really useful to make the text applicable to a classroom. I think the price could have been a little lower though. It was only a couple of dollars cheaper then my bookstore price.

this book is not going to be all that i need to prepare for taking the lsat but its a good compass for strengths and weaknesses. it is also helpful as a look into the perspective the tests originate from. i like that the writers are not into any kind of head trip; i’ve read other stuff about test taking (for the lsat, the gre’s etc) and the books always get into various psychologies, you wont find that here. just straight up tests, analysis of question types and answers broken down. if i had the attention span to memorize all of the information in here i could probably kill the test with this book alone (plus some more practice tests) but chances are i will have to resort to more gimmicky stuff because it is just a little to dry for it to be worth the effort.

Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 2.0: 1,001 Unconventional Tips, Tricks and Tactics for Landing Your Dream Job Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

I have been unemployed for the past 14 months and wanted to gain an “edge” in this difficult and frustrating job market. I found the Guerrilla Marketing concept while surfing the internet looking for a way to make my resume standout. I can tell you without a doubt that the makeover of my tired old classic chronological resume to the Extreme Guerrilla resume has definitely made me stand out from all the others.

My experience thus far is for every 5 Guerrilla resumes I send; I will get, on the average, 3 inquiries from hiring managers. In addition, when I call the hiring manager a few days after I send out my resume I will more often than not get to speak to them. The first part of our conversation starts with how unique, eye-catching, and different my resume is. The second, and most important, part of the conversation is discussing my qualifications which lead to an on-site interview.

I am still working through the book and look forward to more unique methods to enhance my job search. I definitely recommend reading the section on the how and why of creating a LinkedIn profile. I cannot tell you the number of times I have been able to use my on-line social contacts to help me find the direct hiring manager for an open position at their company.

This book applies to all industries and functions and delivers a number of practical methods for conducting a job search in these most difficult and challenging times.

I definitely recommend this book be part of your arsenal during your job search.

Medical Terminology For Dummies Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

What I mean by ‘typical ‘Dummies’ book’, is that there’s quite a lot of fluff — of this type: “[new term introduced] … I know, it sounds a lot like [pick one: a new dance step. the name of a band. a delicious dessert.] But it’s really not!” Cute, but pretty extraneous. As always, though, I adore Rich Tenant’s cartoons. I don’t know how he can pull off so many truly funny single-panel cartoons on *so many* different topics. (He does the cartoons for every ‘Dummies’ book I’ve read. Which has apparently been way too many.)

This book on medical terminology specifically also has *far* more repetition than is really helpful. Repetition is a good thing pedagogically; but what the author has chosen to repeat is to a great extent the terms one has already learned from watching endless re-runs of ‘Scrubs’. I’d have preferred that the repetition be saved for the more obscure and/or conceptually difficult terms.

The Kindle format is brilliant for books like this, on account of the integrated dictionary. Not only does the New Oxford American Dictionary include quite a lot of medical terms (far more than expected; it’s pretty cool); if there’s an unfamiliar term *within* the dictionary definition, one can place the cursor next to *it* for a definition — and still return to the main text by clicking the ‘back’ button. Sweet. I have loved not having to pop up to grab the giant American Heritage off the shelf for the purpose of double-checking those word histories that I’m curious about — or for double-checking medical terms I ‘make up’ to test my comprehension as I read.

My one serious criticism of the Kindle version of the text regards table formatting — which is extremely important in this book. The book includes many tables listing, for example, ‘root of medical term with connecting vowel’, ‘definition’, and ‘medical term built with that root’. For example: ‘crani/o’, ‘means: cranium or skull’, and ‘craniotomy’. In most cases, the root with connecting vowel — *the thing we’re trying to learn* — cuts off on the right, so we lose the connecting vowel, and sometimes the end of the root itself. I’m nearly halfway through the book — am reading it from the beginning — and have come upon only a single instance where switching to ‘landscape’ view fixed the problem and made the cut-off words completely visible. In all cases, there is *plenty* of room to simply make the ‘root’ column wider without cutting off words in the remaining columns.

A minor criticism, is that the one image I’ve seen so far is, like so very many Kindle images, extremely faint — fainter than the text. This is problematic, because the labels of the parts of the skeleton are extremely tiny, and are very difficult to read. It would help both legibility, and the impact of illustrations on the overall book design, if images and their associated labels could be darker.

The book itself is quite good, and covers a lot of ground for the price. I’d like to see the formatting fixed, but it’s still useful. It’s just making me work harder than I should have to to puzzle out the missing bits, given that I paid about USD 13 for my copy. Even given my complaints, I’m considering the A & P book in addition. Will make my final decision about that after I’ve finished reading this one, and the A & P sample.

The Frederick Douglass Papers: Volume 1, Series One: Speeches, Debates, and Interviews, 1841-1846 (The Frederick Douglass Papers Series) Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Historians often call the Civil War the first modern war, a precursor to the great battlefield slaughterhouses of the twentieth century. Frederick Douglass shows that America was also first to invent the totalitarian police state. It’s hard to believe Stalin didn’t have MY BONDAGE AND MY FREEDOM prominently positioned on his bookshelf for frequent consultation because the Soviet system of oppression had so much in common with the system of oppression in the American South. The only significant difference was that, in the Soviet system, absolute power was vested in Stalin; in the American system, absolute power was vested in each slavemaster. Each slavemaster was, in essence, a little Stalin, with life and death power over his slave property.

The slave system rigorously withheld news and information from slaves. A slave often would not know his father or even his own date of birth. He could not lawfully learn to read. He could not travel without written authorization. He could not associate freely with other slaves. He could not safely trust anyone or confide his private thoughts to anyone because planted informers were so numerous. Slaves had to avoid even certain thoughts for fear the slavemaster would see in their facial expressions what was in their minds.

Disguised slave catchers would sometimes help and encourage a slave to escape, only to capture him for the reward. The slavemaster demanded and enforced absolute, immediate, and unquestioned subservience through fear, a liberal use of the lash and the constant threat of transferring a recalcitrant slave to an even harsher labor camp in the deep South.

Yet MY BONDAGE AND MY FREEDOM is by no means a depressing book, thanks to Douglass’ irrepressible courage, wit, spirit and good luck when he most needed it. There are even a few intentionally hilarious moments, which I won’t give away in this review.

To avoid capture after his escape to the North, Douglass used the fees from his speeches in Great Britain and royalties from his book sales to legally buy his own freedom from his Maryland owner.

The book covers a period of American history I knew little about, the period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. I didn’t know, for example, that the abolition movement early in that period favored secession from the United States on the belief that the Constitution favored the South and backed to the hilt the slave system. An excellent recent book that supports that view is SLAVERY’S CONSTITUTION by David Waldstreicher.

Even though Douglass was a religious, believing Christian, he leveled his most scathing criticism at the way Southerners used Christianity to justify and advance the slave system. He often noted that the cruelest slave masters were also credited as the most religious members of their communities. Some of the worst even had “Rev.” attached to their names. The only slavemaster Douglass credited with relative decency and kindness also happened to be an atheist.

The Frederick Douglass Papers: Volume 1, Series One: Speeches, Debates, and Interviews, 1841-1846 (The Frederick Douglass Papers Series) Overview

Ex-slave Frederick Douglass’s second autobiography-written after ten years of reflection following his legal emancipation in 1846 and his break with his mentor William Lloyd Garrison-catapulted Douglass into the international spotlight as the foremost spokesman for American blacks, both freed and slave. Written during his celebrated career as a speaker and newspaper editor, My Bondage and My Freedom reveals the author of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) grown more mature, forceful, analytical, and complex with a deepened commitment to the fight for equal rights and liberties.

The book is fairly well written. Gets to the point quickly, but I wish it was organized a little better. I heard that the 2006 version is a little better because it has more information. I guess the 2007 version was cut shorter to get to the point more.

Frindle Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

My daughter’s 4th grade class read ‘Frindle’ which is how I ‘discovered’ it. Now why I didn’t know about it before, I can’t say. I mean this book has won over 20 awards world-wide.

The story is about 5th Grader, Nick Allen. He’s an imaginative small town boy, but that doesn’t lead to trouble until he invents a word– Frindle. A ‘frindle’ is just another word for pen but it’s invention sets off a battle of will with Nick’s grim teacher, Mrs. Granger — a woman seriously devoted to the dictionary. Matters between them escalate as news of the new word spreads and matters get seriously out of control. As the conflict escalates, Nick has to figure out whether he will stick up for what he believes or cave to the pressure that is put on him. He and various other people in the small town also need to determine how they will deal with all the press.

Talking Points:::
Frindle is an amazing book that has changed my whole perspective about what can be accomplished by a book for elementary aged kids. I’m afraid I’ve read so many books for this age group that basically little more than shallow adventures or chicklit for smallfry. But here is a book that not only has humor and light human drama, but also gives kids insight into how The 4th Estate (the Press) works, and how words originate and evolve.

The writing is easy and the plot moves ahead speedily. There’s a good deal of humor, and I thought it was particularly funny that Nick ended up on the Tonight Show. The ending with Mrs. Granger and Nick is touching and sweet.

The characters are fleshed out and interesting.

The age range for this book will depend on the child, of course. It’s written at AR (accelerated reading) level 5.6 It can be read to younger children.

Frindle Feature

Frindle Overview

Is Nick Allen a troublemaker?

He really just likes to liven things up at school — and he’s always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he’s got the inspiration for his best plan ever…the frindle. Who says a pen has to be called a pen? Why not call it a frindle? Things begin innocently enough as Nick gets his friends to use the new word. Then other people in town start saying frindle. Soon the school is in an uproar, and Nick has become a local hero. His teacher wants Nick to put an end to all this nonsense, but the funny thing is frindle doesn’t belong to Nick anymore. The new word is spreading across the country, and there’s nothing Nick can do to stop it.
