Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is, in my opinion, a Goldilocks book. Not too much info, not too little. It gives you the route for 11 road trips across North America/the U.S. I didn’t know it while I was doing it, but I’ve done 30%-45% of the Great River Road tour. I’ve hit a bit of a few of the other ones as well. If you just want to get out and go, and aren’t sure where to go, this is worth picking up. If you just want to try something different, pick this up. It gives you an idea of what to see along the way, and even where to stay. It doesn’t give you everything, otherwise it would weigh a hundred pounds. It does, however, give you a bit above the basics. I’ve been to some of the cities on several of the routes, and I knew about those cities, but this showed me a few things I didn’t know. It’s just a good read to get off the Interstates and Freeways of America and really see America.

Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Sarah MacDonald made a career for herself on Australian radio, namely a government funded ‘youth’ radion station. So the early part of the book did lapse into an adolescent style – things put bluntly not for artistic purpose but instead to get a reaction. And she certainly pulls no punches in her overall disdain for India upon her first visit as a young woman and her overall negative impressions when she returned to follow her boyfriend. So initially I was settling in for a rather turgid read when, gradually, the book left behind some of the youth radio affectations and after a very serious illness the author determines that since she is in the place, she might as well throw herself into it and check the place out.

The book essentially follows the authors gradually changing views on aspects of India and the colour and vibrancy of the place certainly ekes out between the lines. After her illness the author admit she has a resurgent interest in spirituality and this exploration of the different religions prevalent in India makes up a huge part of the book. The authors fascination with the Indian ethos of acceptance is particularly poignant given that September 11th happened while she was a resident of the place. This book certainly captures the essence of chaos that typifies many peoples views of India and its discussion of both the esoteric along with the mundane aspects of domestic life in India is a nice juxtaposition.

While this is not necessarily a highly literary book and while it’s no punches pulled approach will perhaps annoy those who have their rose coloured glasses firmly welded to their faces, I found this book to be an amusing enough read while away on a work trip. Certainly, I’ll be buying a more text book stlye work to give me a handle on Indian history, but this did give me an appetite to perhaps one day travel to India to see the sights and taste the delights for myself. And that, surely, is good enough reason for me to award this four stars.

The One Minute Manager Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

It is likely reasonable to deem The One Minute Manager as a classic among management books. The obvious theme is managing people and employees, but the cover promises ways to simplify one’s life, get more done and be less stressed. Along these lines, the authors have penned several other tomes including The One Minute Father/Mother, The One Minute Sales Person and others.
The One Minute Manager emphasizes human dynamics and managing people as a means of achieving results. It might seem foreign or simplistic to some who espouse technology over people, blame employees first due to a preference for a top-down culture, care more for corporations than people, and ironically end up serving neither or those whose books and programs are not served by conceding to the fundamentals, but that highlights the need for the book even more.

At first, the notion might seem absurd or a stretch, but the book is not a gimmick. The authors are a Ph.D. holder and M.D. respectively and have based the short and straightforward book on research into human behaviour and stimuli. This was my second time reading The One Minute Manager (The `One-Minute’ Manager?) and it felt as interesting as the first time, which was back in 1996. After all these years, the advice of Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson rings true as does the endorsement of C-level persons from firms like Chevron and Jack In The Box.

Perhaps like the reader, the book’s narrator is a somewhat incredulous and curious person who is justly sceptical about the concept. He meets a man who is a `One Minute Manager’ and has three tips. While these might sound simple and obvious the detail and methodology is the key. Using a story format, the book hones in on the three basic components of human management each of which should take approximately a minute to accomplish following the initial discussions and training that come with being a new employee or the initiation of a new project.

1- One Minute Goal Setting. The technique insists on writing one’s actionable goals down in a concise format of one page with no more than 250 words. That leads to knowing how to constantly measure performance, reviewing them and agreeing to them with one’s manager.

2- One Minute Praising. This is part of an upfront contract. Praise should follow the commendable action immediately and be specific. Impart sincerity by offering a slight physical touch and encourage more of the same.

3- One Minute Reprimand. This is also part of an upfront understanding. The criticism happens as soon as the manager knows of the mistake and is very specifically about a behaviour and not the person. This is followed by a few seconds of silence and a reversion to the praise of the person overall. Do not dwell on it. Be tough at first in order to make sure the pleasant part comes second.

People Who Feel Good About Themselves Produce Results. The number one motivator for humans is feedback on results.

The One Minute Manager Overview

The world’s foremost producer of personal development and motivational audio programs now offers the most important minute of your career.

With more than two million hardcover copies in print, The One Minute Manager ranks as one of the most successful management books ever published. Now, you can listen and learn the strategies of one-minute management to save time and increase your productivity whether it be in your business, your home or even managing your children.

You will learn to use the three easy-to-master management techniques that have already changed the lives of millions:

One Minute Goal Setting
One Minute Praisings
and
One Minute Reprimands

Deceptively simple, and measurably effective, the secrets of one-minute management will help you boost profits, productivity and purpose immediately.

Barchester Towers (English Library) Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Anthony Trollope, like Miniver Cheevy, was born at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Nineteenth century England produced some of the greatest novelists the world has ever known–Dickens, Austin, the Bronte sisters, Hardy, etc. In this company Trollope has been somewhat lost and that is unfortunate. His books are interesting and filled with humor, pathos and the stuff of life. They are also literate (Trollope was especially versed in the Greeks and Shakespeare), full of good humor and provide lessons for life. It is clear from the limited number of reviews on Amazon.com that Trollope is not widely read. It is equally clear from the mostly positive results that he is a good writer who should get more attention.

Barchester Towers is the second of the six books in the Barsetshire series. The books run in historical sequence but can be read independently. The first in the series, The Warden, tells of Mr. Harding and his younger daughter, Eleanor. Rev. Harding is forced to resign as the warden (a kind of manager/minister) of a hospital for elderly men because the salary is too high. He is exposed by John Bold, a reformer, and a local newspaper. But Harding is a good man and he accepts the situation gracefully; his daughter, in fact, marries Bold who then dies but leaves his widow well off financially and with a baby boy.

Barchester Towers picks up the story at that point and switches the focus to another group of largely religious individuals. It should be noted that the novel is not about religion as much as it is about power. On the other hand it would be a good idea to know something about the Church of England, such as what the various religious titles represent (archdeacon, dean, vicar, prebendary, etc.), as well as the attitude of the two political parties (Whigs and Tories) toward religion.

At the start of the novel the bishop of Barchester dies and a new bishop, Dr.Proudie, is appointed in his place. Proudie is a short, indecisive man who is dominated by his wife. He picks Obadiah Slope as his second in command. Slope is reminiscent of Dickens’ sly, scheming Uriah Heep. His objective is to be the de facto bishop, a position that Mrs. Proudie aspires to in her own way as well. Set against this trio are the local Barchester clergy led by Archdeacon Grantly. The recently deceased bishop was the archdeacon’s father and the son hoped to succeed to the office. The ambitious Grantly takes an instant dislike to the officious Mr. Slope and their rivalry is one of the main focuses of the book

A number of other characters and sub-plots suffuse the novel. The Stanhope family–mother, father, two daughters and son, soon arrive on the scene. This group includes Madeline, a beautiful but physically impaired young woman who toys with men’s affections and Bertie, a shiftless but essentially decent young man. Also joining the cast is the Rev. Mr. Arabin, brought in by the archdeacon to help combat Mr. Slope. The other major plot is the efforts of three men to secure the hand of the widow Eleanor Bold. Slope is one schemer who is primarily intent on securing her money. Bertie Stanhope, the irresponsible prodigal son in the Stanhope family is also encouraged to marry her for her fortune. Finally there is Mr. Arabin, a decent man, but inexperienced in matters of love. Early in the book (page 112) Trollope enters the story to reassure the reader that “It is not destined that Eleanor shall marry Mr. Slope or Bertie Stanhope.” This tactic, engaged in by other British writers (Fielding for example) can be irritating, but Trollope does it in a good humored way.

The central power struggle involves who shall be appointed to the Warder position which has now been restructured. The archdeacon pulls for Mr. Harding to be reappointed, while Mrs. Proudie pumps for the Rev. Mr. Quiverful who has a wife and 14 children to look after and needs the income the job will provide. Mr. Slope slides between the two contenders, depending on how he sees his advantage. When another position opens up, that of Dean, the stakes get even higher.

The novel reaches a climax at a party given by an elderly matron, Miss Thorne. Eleanor’s two ill suited suitors make their pitch, Trollope’s caution to the reader comes true, and the novel proceeds to a happy ending for almost everyone.

A final comment. I read a news report recently that president-elect Obama will stop reading novels and spend more time in the gym because of what he sees as the increased demands on his new job. That is, in my view, a big mistake. Novels give us insights into how to live our own lives and we are all better off for reading them. For example in Barchester Towers there is a scene between Archdeacon Grantly and Mr. Williams in which Mr. Williams has received a letter from Mr. Slope for his daughter. Both men object to Slope both as an individual and especially as a suitor for Eleanor. The archdeacon gets very angry and says that Eleanor has disgraced him and that if she marries Slope he will not have anything further to do with her. Mr. Williams, on the other hand, while equally distressed at the prospects of his daughter marrying Slope, says that he will accept that choice and continue his relationship with her. Here we have a clear difference in character. The archdeacon will only have friendship with people who agree with his views–much as George Bush’s comment after 9/11, “you are with us or you are against us.” But we can’t live in a world like that. We have to live as Mr. Williams suggests, by accepting that other people can have different views from our own. So lets hope Obama spends less time on the treadmill and more time on Trollope!

Barchester Towers (English Library) Overview

A series of graded readers covering a wide range of styles and kinds of English, both fiction and non-fiction, with comprehension exercises, questions and crosswords. Level 4 has a vocabulary of 1500 words.

Barchester Towers (English Library) Specifications

This 1857 sequel to The Warden wryly chronicles the struggle for control of the English diocese of Barchester. The evangelical but not particularly competent new bishop is Dr. Proudie, who with his awful wife and oily curate, Slope, maneuver for power. The Warden and Barchester Towers are part of Trollope’s Barsetshire series, in which some of the same characters recur.

Check Out The Federalist Papers for $4.26

The Federalist Papers Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

The end of the Revolution in 1781 left the United States operating under the Articles of Confederation, a union of equal states. There were problems with this government. A group of men convened in Philadelphia to consider Amendments. The result was a new Constitution to address the problems of the old. This change was controversial, so advocates of the New began writing a series of articles to explain the changes. Alexander Hamilton began the series and was aided by James Madison and John Jay. Those who objected to the original quickly added a Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Others were added over time. This book has the 85 articles, the Constitution, and 24 amendments, and an ‘Index of Ideas’.

‘The Federalist’ is the most important work in political science that has been written in the United States. It has been quoted by the Supreme Court for judicial review, executive independence, and national supremacy (‘Introduction’). It provides the “genuine meaning” of the Constitution. These articles were published from October 1787 to May 1788. They argue for the adoption of the new Federal Constitution. The immediate purpose was to win over New York to insure the new Constitution (p.ix). Alexander Hamilton was the person behind these articles, the only man from New York to sign. John Jay was a distinguished New York lawyer who authored the NY Constitution of 1777 (a source for the Federal Constitution). James Madison was the “most useful member of the Convention of 1787″ (p.x). All had distinguished careers.

‘The Federalist’ was a source of arguments for the new Constitution. Promises, threats, bargains, and debates were more important than eloquent words (p.xi). [But that leaves no paper trail.] The value of these articles derived from the endurance of the Constitution and the country it created. It explains the value of a Federal government, the failure of the Articles of Confederation, the defense of a federal constitution, and the truths about a free government (p.xii). Given the diverse interests of society, there is a way to keep balance in government.

Madison was a proponent of limited government while Hamilton admired an “energetic government”. The Federalist is a “bundle of compromises”. The message is: “no happiness without liberty, no liberty without self-government, no self-government without constitutionalism, no constitutionalism without stability and order” (p.xvi). Clinton Rossiter says the most important articles are numbers 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 23, 37, 39, 47, 48, 49, 51, 62, 63, 70,78, 84, and 85. Articles 15 to 22 address the defects of the Articles of Confederation.

The Federalist Papers Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780553213409
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

The Federalist Papers Overview

This classic of American political theory, first published in 1788, defends the Constitution and explains the complexities of a constitutional government based on the inherent rights of man.

The Federalist Papers Specifications

“This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren … should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties.” So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors of The Federalist Papers, arguing that if the United States was truly to be a single nation, its leaders would have to agree on universally binding rules of governance–in short, a constitution. In a brilliant set of essays, Jay and his colleagues Alexander Hamilton and James Madison explored in minute detail the implications of establishing a kind of rule that would engage as many citizens as possible and that would include a system of checks and balances. Their arguments proved successful in the end, and The Federalist Papers stand as key documents in the founding of the United States.

Programming Interviews Exposed: Secrets to Landing Your Next Job Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

So you got yourself an interview. Congratulations! I was all over the place about which textbooks of my undergrad years I should study but then I came across this book which helped me narrow down my studying area by far. It prepares you for some fundamental C stuff like pointers and also for common algorithms and tricky ones that you have to think for yourself. It also makes you think smartly when trying to figure out some puzzle that occasionally appear in interviews. Overall it was really great, easy and fast to go through. Unfortunately there were a few (5-6) code errors (about half of them were corrected in the errata). Some C algorithms from the 1st version were converted to Java which was kind of a bummer (I would like to see both). Overall, I suggest it :)

Everything you need to know to succeed in the programming interview and get the job you want Whether you are a veteran programmer seeking a new position or a whiz kid starting your career, interviewing for a programming job requires special preparation. I purchased this book because math is my weakest subject on the act. I was scoring a 16 on the act test, I need a 20 for the promise scholarship in WV, it pays for your tuition. I just read some of the tips, and nothing else and it raised my score 1 point to a 17. Finally this summer I have used this book almost weekly, to get ready for the ACT test in September.

When I took the first diagnostic exam in the book it said an 16, I am on my second test and I received a 20! i am so excited because there is 3 mores tests to go and I think I will be able to raise it to maybe a 22, that way I feel like I can get at lest a 20 on the real test. In September I will tell you how it went.

Not only did I use it to practice fort the ACT but I also used it to practice for the COMPASS Math Test, I started with a 17 on the COMPASS, and raised it to a 44, I no longer would have to take a non credited math class in college. In my high school I need a 49 on the COMPASS test to taker College Algebra, I think with a little more practice I will get it before school starts.

I strongly suggest this book.

The Daring Book for Girls Review

Hot!!!

My daughter saw this in the bookstore, and stated that she “reeeeaaaallllly” wanted it. She’s a voracious reader, and just turned 8, so I kind of thought it would perfect. And it is! She reads it all the time, and refers to it just as much. She’s learning, but in a fun way that she controls. All the stuff inside is pretty neat, and she frequently tells me things I don’t know, all courtesy of the book. Her birthday was actually just a week ago, and this is so far and beyond her favorite possession, I actually had a cake decorator make her a cake that looked like the book, but instead of “The Daring Book for Girls”, it said, “The Daring Cake for Gracie”. She loved it!
