Easy Readers – English – Level 4: Slaughterhouse Five (German Edition) Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

I realized that I’m probably one of the many ignorant kids of my generation who have been too busy to pick up a book by this author, so this is officially my introduction to Kurt Vonnegut. So it goes.

I admit that my venture into reading a Vonnegut book was triggered by my curiosity, yet again, after reading a lot of positive, even gushing, reviews about most of his books. For a book that’s dealing with the horror and gore of war conflated with issues of time travel and alien abduction, it is so incredibly well-written. He describes the events so matter-of-factly that descriptions of corpses and human waste don’t throw you off. Instead, you keep on reading. He writes with a certain level of humor washed with sarcasm that makes you appreciate the experiences that’s being presented to you without feeling any kind of disgust.

Billy Pilgrim becomes `unstuck in time’ after a plane crash. The story takes you back and forth to different points in Billy’s life–from his experiences pre- and post-war. The novel also has some science fiction elements with regards to Billy getting abducted by the aliens from the planet of Tralfamadore. His daughter refuses to believe him and instead takes it as one of the many signs of his deteriorating health. The Tralfamadorians teach him about seeing life in the fourth dimension. They believe that their body never truly dies and that it continues to exist in other times and places when it was still alive.

“I am a Tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is.”

It may sound like a weird book and it is, but it also heartrendingly humanistic. The truth is, this book reminded me of J. D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in The Rye”. The experience as a whole felt familiar and the difference is that, I enjoyed this book a lot more than the other. Don’t get me wrong. The similarity lies in the writing style and how Billy Pilgrim reminded me so much of Holden Caulfield, but that’s about it. This book stands on its own, definitely. So does Salinger’s “The Catcher in The Rye”. I’m re-reading both in the near future because they are the kind of books that call for a second or third visit.

Easy Readers – English – Level 4: Slaughterhouse Five (German Edition) Overview

Kurt Vonnegut’s absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes ‘unstuck in time’ after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut’s) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Slaughterhouse-Five is not only Vonnegut’s most powerful book, it is also as important as any written since 1945. Like Catch-22, it fashions the author’s experiences in the Second World War into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. Slaughterhouse-Five boasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut’s other works, but the book’s basis in rock-hard, tragic fact gives it unique poignancy — and humor.

Don’t let the ease of reading fool you–Vonnegut’s isn’t a conventional, or simple, novel. He writes, “There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick, and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces. One of the main effects of war, after all, is that people are discouraged from being characters…” Slaughterhouse-Five (taken from the name of the building where the POWs were held) is not only Vonnegut’s most powerful book, it is as important as any written since 1945. PLPR5:Rainmaker, The RLA Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
I love the unexpected which this novel has. His characters might be stereotypes, but they were well done, fun, and had me chuckling. The theme is David vs. Goliath. The ending is happy with a bitter component. The evil, greedy, large corporation leaves a bad taste. The story took a while to get going which was fine. But the last third of the book had me on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put it down. Before reading it I didn’t know if I was going to like reading about an insurance company trial. But I did. It was excellent.

Most of my reading is romance novels, so for me to love something like this should say something about its broad appeal and entertainment value.

If I could, I would change two things about the story. (1) The ending was happy, but it could have been happier. (2) Grisham never tells us who burned down a law firm early in the story. I was wondering if Great Benefit was behind it, but it was never explained.

STORY BRIEF:
Rudy just finished law school, is broke and cannot find a job. He passes the bar and gets his license just in time to represent a low income family against an insurance company.

DATA:
Setting: current day mostly Memphis, Tennessee. Copyright: 1995. Genre: legal suspense.

Modern European History Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

This is a wonderful review book and the chapters are quite short and precise. Exactly what I need to cram for the AP exam. However, I would pair this up with a review book to make sure I can retain the information. It’s easy to read several chapters within an hour and then quickly forget them within the next several hours.
I really recommend McGraw’s AP Achiever review book (red cover one) to go along with this book. Actually, even if you don’t get this book, get the AP Achiever one. I felt that the McGraw book helped me more in preparation for the AP exam.

This is a great book for a short and concise review, but don’t expect this book to substitute for a textbook. For example, there was definitely not enough details about the Thirty Year’s War nor the English Civil War and those are some pretty big conflicts in European history that should be memorized.

The Power of Body Language: How to Succeed in Every Business and Social Encounter Review

Hot!!!

I had heard of Tonya Reiman because of the body language analysis she does on Foxnews but really didn’t know what to expect from her book, The Power of Body Language: How to Succeed in Every Business and Social Encounter. I was totally blown away by how much I enjoyed this book and how much information was presented. By all measures this is an excellent introduction to the basics of reading, interpreting and understanding body language and nonverbal communication. It was an easy read, enjoyable and presented the concepts in a logical order.

Most people, myself included, want to learn a little about body language so we can communicate with others better, detect a lie or two and better communicate in our relationships. Tonya did an excellent job of covering these points in chapter 7, “Reading their Secret signals.” For most situations the knowledge presented in these chapters would more than suffice in helping you read their body language signals.

Want to know more about body language for business? This book delivers. The information on making a good first impression was top notch and spoke directly to the issue. I learned a few things and trust me, many people can find a thing or two they can put into practice to improve the impressions and impact they make on others. Aside from the nonverbal advice for making a first impression she covered how to easily establish rapport using the “Reiman Rapport Method”. A rapport building model that is both simple and effective.

Looking for body language tips on improving your relationship or having more luck with the opposite sex? She’s got this covered as well in the back pages of the book.

I often have friends ask for a great book to learn body language basics and this is now the one I recommend.

The Power of Body Language: How to Succeed in Every Business and Social Encounter Overview

Nationally renowned body language expert Tonya Reiman illuminates what until now has been a gray area in interpersonal communication: harnessing the power of your nonverbal cues to get what you want out of every aspect of life, from professional encounters to personal relationships.

Unlike other books on this fascinating topic, The Power of Body Language is your practical, personal playbook for getting what you desire from others — and zoning in on what others are saying to you without words. Once you know the hidden meaning behind specific gestures, facial cues, stances, and body movements, you will possess a sixth sense that can be a life-changing, career-saving, trouble-shooting skill you will never leave home without! Learn how to:

Take control of your own secret signals

Gain trust — and detect untrustworthiness

Ace a job interview

Shake hands (the right way)

Make a dazzling first impression

Exude confidence — even when you’re not feeling it

Recognize if someone is lying

Understand why men and women “speak” a different language

Read a face to know a person’s inner emotional state…and much more.

In an insightful and engaging narrative, Tonya Reiman analyzes all of the components of body language — the languages of the face, the body, space and touch, and sound. She shows you how to become a Master Communicator with The Reiman Rapport Method, a surefire system for building an instant connection with anyone, in any situation. And she shares the experiences of her clients, from executives to politicians to relationship seekers: Learn from Cindy, a confident and ambitious manager who turned her career around by altering the subconscious messages she was sending her male colleagues…and Peter, the wedding DJ whose client list blossomed as soon as he practiced the art of social smiling!

Peppered with photos and fun facts, The Power of Body Language is as entertaining as it is instructive. Get the power to send and receive the messages you want — and never be left in the dark again.

As a Man Thinketh Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

I purchased this copy for my daughter and her beau. Even though it is available free online because of it’s age, this classic should be on everyone’s book shelf (after having read it first, of course).

As a Man Thinketh Overview

AS A MAN THINKETH, Allen’s most famous book, today is considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.

In “As a Man Thinketh,” James Allen reveals how our thoughts determine reality. Whether or not we are conscious of it, our underlying beliefs shape our character, our health and appearance, our circumstances, and our destinies. Allen shows how we can master our thoughts to create the life we want, lest we drift through life unconscious of the inner forces that keep us mired in failure and frustration. “The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart-this you will build your life by, this you will become.” This principle, which others have called THE SECRET or the LAW OF ATTRACTION, was clearly and convincingly stated for the first time in “As a Man Thinketh.”
As a being of Power, Intelligence, and Love, and the lord of his own thoughts, man holds the key to every situation, and contains within himself that transforming and regenerative agency by which he may make himself what he wills.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JAMES ALLEN (1864-1912) was an Englishman who retired from the business world to pursue a lifestyle of writing and contemplation. His books are classics in the fields of inspiration and spirituality. Although best known for AS A MAN THINKETH, he authored several other books that deal with the power of thought including THE PATH OF PROSPERITY, EIGHT PILLARS OF PROSPERITY and James Allen’s BOOK OF MEDITATION FOR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR.

Allen’s books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.

What man or woman among you could find fault with forty Shakespeare plays + his sonnets for just over a quid in a highly portable format. Amazing! The Table of Contents is great. You can use it to go to the start of any play or act within the play. I used the “Search this Book” function in the menu to track down a couple of famous speeches by typing in “Band of Brothers” and “Slings and Arrows” (after getting over 100 hits when I typed in “To be or not to be”). In each case I was taken right to Harry and Hamlet respectively. As the product description advises, the book opens to the first line of the first play and you have to either click menu and “go to beginning or the book” or hit the “previous page” button a number of times to get to the start of the index. Methinks it most cooly presents the bard’s great output. Address thy gate, gentle reader, to the purchase button.

I’m a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

3.5 stars (round to 4)

I didn’t like this book quite as much as A Walk In The Woods or some of Bryson’s other books, because it isn’t about travel or adventure. So it isn’t as exciting. It is about more mundane, everyday things.

Still, it is a pretty good book, and Byron’s wit and sense of humor make it fun to read. It is a collection of weekly columns that he wrote for a newspaper. The basic theme is what it is like to return to live in America, for a native-born American who has been living in Britain for over 20 years. Thus, Bryson is able to view the culture from both the British and American perspectives. This does lead to some interesting essays.

Most of the essays have nothing to do with either British or American points of view, or comparisons of the two cultures. These include essays about such things as: the demise of the diner, Bryson’s ineptitude with home maintenance and contractors, the sinking of the Titanic, Rules For Living, a family trip to the beach, etc. They are amusing, and do give an overall picture of the American lifestyle, especially as it is lived in small-town New Hampshire.

There is a humorous illustration at the beginning of each essay, which is often a collage and always relates to the theme of the essay. They are a nice touch.

So although I wouldn’t consider this Bryson’s best work, it does make for a lighthearted and pleasant read.

Having recently read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond, I was particularly interested in an essay about unusual foods which includes a discussion of Edward O. Wilson’s book, The Diversity of Life. Wilson takes the opposite position on why we eat the particular foods that we do, than does Diamond. (Wilson believes that we eat only a very few of the wide range of available edibles simply out of habit, because they happened to be the things that our neolithic ancestors cultivated. Diamond suggests that certain plants and animals are far more suitable to agriculture and domestication than others, and their availability at any given place determined how successful the culture was that lived there.)

I’m a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780767903820
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

I’m a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away Overview

After living in Britain for two decades, Bill Bryson recently moved back to the United States with his English wife and four children (he had read somewhere that nearly 3 million Americans believed they had been abducted by aliens–as he later put it, “it was clear my people needed me”). They were greeted by a new and improved America that boasts microwave pancakes, twenty-four-hour dental-floss hotlines, and the staunch conviction that ice is not a luxury item.

Delivering the brilliant comic musings that are a Bryson hallmark, I’m a Stranger Here Myself recounts his sometimes disconcerting reunion with the land of his birth. The result is a book filled with hysterical scenes of one man’s attempt to reacquaint himself with his own country, but it is also an extended if at times bemused love letter to the homeland he has returned to after twenty years away.

I’m a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away Specifications

In the world of contemporary travel writing, Bill Bryson, the bestselling author of A Walk in the Woods, often emerges as a major contender for King of Crankiness. Granted, he complains well and humorously, but between every line of his travel books you can almost hear the tinny echo: “I wanna go home, I miss my wife.”

Happily, I’m a Stranger Here Myself unleashes a new Bryson, more contemplative and less likely to toss daggers. After two decades in England, he’s relocated to Hanover, New Hampshire. In this collection (drawn from dispatches for London’s Night & Day magazine), he’s writing from home, in close proximity to wife and family. We find a happy marriage between humor and reflection as he assesses life both in New England and in the contemporary United States. With the telescopic perspective of one who’s stepped out of the American mainstream and come back after 20 years, Bryson aptly holds the mirror up to U.S. culture, capturing its absurdities–such as hotlines for dental floss, the cult of the lawsuit, and strange American injuries such as those sustained from pillows and beds. “In the time it takes you to read this,” he writes, “four of my fellow citizens will somehow manage to be wounded by their bedding.”

The book also reflects the sweet side of small-town USA, with columns about post-office parties, dining at diners, and Thanksgiving–when the only goal is to “get your stomach into the approximate shape of a beach ball” and be grateful. And grateful we are that the previously peripatetic Bryson has returned to the U.S., turning his eye to this land–while living at home and near his wife. Under her benevolent influence, he entertains through thoughtful insights, not sarcastic stabs. –Melissa Rossi
